The Hole Cycle Stops Here!

You never know what our high-desert winds are going to blow into town. This week it was a CYCLONE! (of sorts)

Foreseeing the weather, Timberline Adventures Tours owner, Barbara, reached out looking for shelter for her 2024 Coast-to-Coast cycle tour riders. Twenty of them (including support crew). And just like that, the HOLE WAS FILLED UP!

Readers note: Columbus, New Mexico is also the end of the Continental Divide Bike and Hike trail. A plaque at the border will be your starting or ending picture!

Today, most visitors to Columbus are there for a short stop while en route to Old Mexico. Situated just a few miles north of the port of entry to Palomas, MX visitors often stay on the US side of the border and walk over to Mexico for shopping, dining and reduced price medical care. The treasures of this region are plentiful and one of New Mexico’s best kept secrets. Columbus, New Mexico’s 9/11 Crossroads

The Village of Columbus, Where New Mexico  Intersects With History

Columbus new mexico, village of columbus, Palomas Mexico, Palomas, Pancho Villa, 9/11, border wall, hole in the wall getaway, Deming, El Paso

Hidden in plain sight at the seemingly prophetic intersection of Interstates 9/11, lies a historical little village nestled firmly in the footprints left by the dramatic events that transformed the United States at the Turn Of The 20th Century. A true American story called Columbus, New Mexico. Established in 1891.

Nine out of ten people will recognize the name of our most infamous figure, Pancho Villabut few will know who he is, or how his name made history. In short, the last time the Continental  U.S. was invaded by a foreign army prior to the Sept 11th, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, was the 1916 Pancho Villa raid on Columbus. (The largest city in New Mexico at the time.) The official military response by the United States Army further marked Columbus a place of transition. It’s where the soldiers in what’s recognized as “The Last Ride Of The United States Calvary” witnessed the first military use of mechanized transportation, and tank divisions. (Led by a young George Patton) Those Calvary men also saw the maiden flight of the newly formed 1st Aero Squadron, featuring the “Jenny” airplane made infamous by its upside-down image misprinted on what is now the world most prized and valuable postage stamp. Read more about the Pancho Villa raid on our COLUMBUS IN U.S. HISTORY page.

The Hole in the Wall Getaway B&B – Columbus, NM

Your Getaway Host “BigAddison”

We both know there’s few good reasons to be visiting the historic Village of Columbus. Unless of course you’re one of them Big Game / Bird Hunters / Rockhounders, Cyclists, Military buffs, Poncho Villa’s Gold hunters, or crossing the border to Palomas, Mexico for inexpensive services, goods and tours.

Or maybe, you could use a hidden getaway to write that novel, regroup, or really hide. Regardless why you’re coming, I’m basically the “Four Seasons” of Columbus or Deming. I’m here for those guests that want, and/or require the best standards available to them.
