“All we are is dust in the wind”, so the song goes. And here in Luna County in March, it can sure feel that way.

Been here for going on twenty years, and I can’t ever get used to the relentless “Winds of March”. This years windy season started exactly on March 1st, and with a big punch.

I purposely made my shopping day a very early 33 mile trip to town knowing the forecast for wind. Usually you can count on the winds not starting in earnest until about noon. And so it seemed at first. I walked into Walmart at 8:30 am. No wind. I walked out at 9:00 am and couldn’t see the parking lot.

After making one more quick stop I knew I had to get on the road before it was closed. I hightailed it down the 11 and passed the guy just pulling out the orange cones to close the road at Monte Vista.

Here’s why…

I have to admit for a minute there, I kinda wished the cone guy showed up 10 seconds sooner.
