Congratulations Bob! – I (BigAddison), had the great pleasure of hosting Bob’s stay in Columbus, NM as he passed through on course for Florida (the feature image shows me and Bob at my B&B the Hole in the Wall Getaway).

Seen here, Bob is working on his itinerary for his ride to El Paso the following day. Bob traveled with a good friend who drove a support vehicle and also acted as his Guinness Book of World Records attempt chronologist. Turns out, Bob’s daily progress had to be certified and witnessed (which I provided for that day). The paperwork meant at least one hour added at the end to each day’s ride.

Bikers and hikers are nothing new to Columbus as we are not only on the Southern Tier route for coast-to-coast riders like Timberline’s yearly group tour that stayed with me a few years back (here’s their story: Enchanted Cycles), we’re also the Southern Terminus for the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) and the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) for hikers. So. it’s par for the course in Columbus to host our walkers and cyclists.

Speaking of “Par for the course”, I’m reminded back in 2013 at my mother’s hotel “Martha’s Place” hosted a young gentleman Golfing from coast-to-coast. I’ll never forget his entourage and camera crew setting up to document his ball landing in our parking lot just in front of the hotel, and again in the morning as he hit it east to Highway 9 and started walking to El Paso.
